Until recently, there has not been a single support group in the entire U.S. specifically for LGBTQ people with disabilities. This vaccuum has been felt by members of the LGBTQ community who also live with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
The Arc of Mercer County is now working hard to fill that gap in support and resources.
Arc Mercer, located in Ewing, New Jersey, is looking to change this reality by forging a new branch of their organization. The initiative, Special Needs Alliance for Pride (SNAP), represents a first-of-its-kind club which will integrate LGBTQ people with special needs into the greater gay community.
SNAP was introduced in June in celebration of National Gay Pride Month. Its mission is to support integration of people with special needs people who identify as LGBTQ into the broader LGBTQ community, and thereby prevent their isolation. Historically, these are people who are both under-integrated and greatly underserved.
